History
The Church of St. Nicholas was built starting in AD 520 on the foundation of an earlier church and completed in the 11th century. St. Nicholas served as bishop here in the 4th century.
Restoration
The church underwent a major restoration in 1862 under Russian Tsar Nicholas I, and is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
