Aspendos-Perge Ancient Cities Route

The Route and Why This Order

This route brings together two of Antalya's great Roman-Pamphylian cities, Aspendos and Perge, in Serik and Aksu districts; a car is needed between the two. It opens at the Aspendos Ancient Theatre — one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in the world and the day's most striking stop, making it a strong opener. The Aspendos Aqueduct and Aspendos Basilica are only minutes away and within the same ancient-city boundary, so all three are grouped as a single visiting block. From there, drive to Perge in Aksu district; starting at the Hellenistic City Gate and continuing through the Perge Stadium, Perge Theatre and Perge Agora in sequence lets visitors experience the city's layers from the Hellenistic through the Roman period in roughly chronological order.

Duration, Distance and Getting Around

The total distance between the two ancient cities is about 38 km; with time at each stop, the route fills a day of roughly 5-6 hours. Both ancient cities are explored on foot; a car is needed for the transfer between them.

Best Time to Go

Both sites are open, shadeless areas — starting early in summer is the most practical way to avoid the heat. Spring and autumn make the stone surfaces easier to explore comfortably.

A Local Tip

Aspendos Theatre is still used for events today; checking the current event calendar before visiting helps anticipate crowds — and possibly catch a performance.
